Therapies practiced at Psychodos

The psychologists at Psychodos have training and experience in a wide number of evidence-based therapy practices. This allows the matching of an applicable psychological therapy or combination of therapies to meet the needs of the individual. The main therapy practices or styles include the following:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT):- CBT helps individuals to identify unhelpful thoughts and behaviours and learn or relearn healthier skills and habits. CBT has been practised widely for more than 30 years. It has been researched extensively, and has found to be a highly effective treatment for a wide range of issues, including: depression, anxiety, substance abuse, personality disorders and eating disorders For further information see Australian Association for Cognitive and Behavioural Therapy
  • Trauma-focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT). TF-CBT  is a special type of CBT for those who are suffering from trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or related disorders. TF-CBT and EMDR (see below) are both rated by the World Health Organisation as the two recommended and most effective therapies for trauma. For more information see World Health Organisation Guidelines.
  • Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR):- EMDR is a powerful psychological treatment that has been used effectively for over 20 years in a variety of international settings and cultures with many different types of psychological distress. For further information see  EMDR Australia or ABC 7:30 report.
  • Schema Focused Therapy (SFT): Schema therapy integrates elements of cognitive therapy, behavior therapy, object relations, and gestalt therapy into one unified, systematic approach to treatment. For further information see  what is schema therapy.
  • Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT): SFBT focuses on solving current and future problems by identifying your abilities and resources you have used in the past. For further information see what is solution focused brief therapy.
  • Narrative Therapy:- “Narrative therapy seeks to be a respectful, non-blaming approach to counselling and community work, which centres people as the experts in their own lives. It views problems as separate from people and assumes people have many skills, competencies, beliefs, values, commitments and abilities that will assist them to reduce the influence of problems in their lives” – From Dulwich Centre, for more information see what is narrative therapy.
