From the first diagnosis of cancer throughout its treatment and post-treatment stages, there is usually a “turning up-side-down” of the lives of the person and the those around them who are coping with cancer. Meaning in life and pre-cancer priorities can change in addition to the effects of fatigue and stress of the cancer itself and its treatment.
These changes can lead to confusion, anxieties, stress and relationship issues. They can lead to constant checking to see if the cancer has returned and constant worrying that can be consuming and not understood by the cancer-survivor, family or friends. At Psychodos, we are aware of these issues and the effects on life-style and relationships. We are also aware how appropriate supporting psychological therapy can assist.
Dr Steve Hansen has had both research and therapy experience in cancer-survivorship and delivering evidence-based therapies. He is also well aware of the “fear of cancer recurrence” that can frequently consume cancer-survivors.
At Psychodos, in conjunction with managing symptoms, we emphasise wellness rather than focusing on illness, the prevention of illness by engaging in lifestyle behaviours, engagement in appropriate and balanced self-care, and preventative health checks.
